Natural and holistic first aid

Whether you are just enjoying time at home or traveling – when your dog needs first aid, a well-prepared all natural first aid kit can reduce stress, save you a trip to the veterinarian’s office and ensure fast relief for your dog.

Be prepared for the inconveniences of summer – bug bites, ticks, hot spots, sun burns as well as common issues that can come-up unexpectedly any time of the year – diarrhea, ear infections, eye infections, etc. You can make your own holistic first aid kit for your dog, you will be glad you did.

How to make your natural and holistic first aid kit for your dog

Here’s what you will need :

  • Bandages – self adherent pet bandages

  • Clean towel and wash cloth

  • Cotton swabs

  • Insect repellent – natural herbal spray and/or natural herbal spot-on and collar drops

  • Tick removal tool

Natural essentials:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – organic unpasteurized and unfiltered for disinfecting skin after removing ticks, as a cleansing rinse or soak diluted with water. Don’t use ACV on broken skin or lesions.

  • Aloe vera gel or a calendula salve – excellent for soothing irritated and inflamed skin.

  • Colloidal Silver for treating infections of all types including ear infections, eye infections and diarrhea.

  • Witch Hazel – a natural astringent and antiseptic for treating bug bites.

  • Raw unpasteurized honey to treat wounds (not for dogs under 1 year of age).

Sun Screen – for your dog’s nose and for dogs with thin or sparse fur:

  • Don’t use conventional sunscreen for humans or pets as it contains multiple toxins.

  • Use coconut oil, sesame seed oil, jojoba oil or wheat germ oil, as they are good natural sunscreens and moisturizers.

  • You can make these natural oils even more effective by adding 5 to 20 drops of therapeutic-grade lavender (or another dog-safe, cat-safe essential oil) for every 30ml of coconut, sesame or jojoba oil.

  • To heal a sun-burned nose, just apply a little vitamin E.
