By working with our shadow animals, we can gain deeper self-awareness and cultivate positive changes in our lives.
What Are They?
Archetypal energies in our unconscious minds are shadow animals. They are guide animals that can help us to access and understand the hidden parts of our psyche. They represent aspects of ourselves we have repressed or denied, and have their own unique energy and qualities. It is possible to heal and transform our lives by working with a particular shadow animal.
What we can learn from them
1. Identify your guide animal
Identifying your guide animal is the initial step in working with your shadow animals. It could be an animal that triggers a deep response, like an owl, bear or wolf, or something you’d rather avoid such as bats, spiders and even mythical beings like werewolves and yetis. Stay mindful of the specific attributes related to your animal and how they tie into your life currently.
2. Meditating
You can then engage in meditation to connect with your shadow animal. Imagine meeting and conversing with your shadow animal to help you achieve transformation. Depending on the animal, your guidance might take the form of a physical action, such as running, swimming, or foraging, or a symbolic action, such as gathering resources. Develop a plan of action based on whatever message you receive.
Consider the following questions:
-
When I encounter or think about this animal, how do I feel?
-
How does this animal represent me?
-
In what ways does my fear of this animal remind me of myself?
3. Take action based on your learning
In order to implement the insights and guidance provided by your shadow animal, work through the steps you identified in the meditative practice, taking inspiration from the animal’s traits and strengths. Making the changes necessary to live the life you desire may not be easy, but you can do it with the help of your shadow animal.
Working with your shadow animal has many benefits
As bearers of light, shadow animals illuminate areas that need soul-healing, and they cross our paths intentionally to be acknowledged.
Often referred to as guide animals, they represent the unloved parts of us we tend to ignore or reject. By encouraging us to embrace our vulnerability, they can give us insight into our innermost thoughts and feelings and can help us heal and transform.
In order to facilitate positive change, it is important to connect with and understand our shadow animal. Our shadow animal can be channeled to dissolve limiting beliefs, behaviors, and thoughts that no longer serve us. We can also use its energy to overcome personal challenges, heal emotionally, and move into a space where we can grow and develop.
The shadow animals are our allies, greatest teachers, healers, and protectors, capable of guiding us on the path to inner transformation.
The shadow work was pioneered by Carl Jung, who wrote, “The world hangs by a thin thread, and that is the psyche of man.” By working with our shadow animals, we can discover our inner self and forge deeper bonds with ourselves, our relationships, and the natural world around us.
By recognizing the importance of our shadow animals and dedicating time and energy to understanding them, we can delve into modern humanity’s hidden, wounded, or shadow, and gain spiritual insights and greater clarity to our lives by holding up a mirror to our psyche. Thus, we are releasing the collective shadow of humanity from destructive and reactive ways of living.
Reflect, drop all projections, and explore the medicine shadow animals have to offer.
